While a smaller collections company with only about 50 to 99 employees, Allied Data services many collections throughout the country every year. They are a diverse collections agency that works in many fields.
Despite their many calls and collections actions every year, they have no Better Business Bureau rating due to a lack of data on the company. According to the BBB website, this not only means that they did not seek accreditation, but also that the BBB could neither confirm nor deny Allied Data’s continued existence as a company, especially given that the website has been down and inactive for over a year.
This inactive state has been in place ever since a Federal Trade Commission (FTC) enforcement action was taken in June 2014 against Blair’s personal assets due to Allied Data’s unfair and deceptive collection tactics under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA). After a $4 million penalty was partially suspended due to Blair’s inability to pay, the company went inactive, and it has been operating less ever since.
The FTC complaint alleged that Allied Data was using false and deceptive methods to collect more than $1.3 million in so-called “convenience fees” and “transaction fees” from consumers who authorized payments by telephone, believing that their payments could not be made via mail. In addition, such fees were made out to be “unavoidable” or even added to accounts without the authorization or knowledge of the customer. Other FTC complaints over the years have accused Allied Data of falsely claiming to be attorneys, lying, making threats, and using generally deceptive tactics to collect owed money—sometimes even false debts.
